3 Easy Steps to Create Your 2023 Vision Board
We’ve all heard the expression, “A goal without a plan is just a dream.” It’s easy to dream big but doing the big (or small) things take work.
Growing up, my dad had a list of goals on his medicine cabinet door. Every morning and night, he reviewed his list—many of the expectations he set for himself he achieved with planning, practice, diligence. As a world-class master swimmer, he continued to stay on top of his game with intense focus. For me, a list of goals is boring (sorry Dad!) but I did turn my high-school hallway locker into my inspo spot. A photo of an XJ6 Jaguar, a pennant flag from my favorite college, a smiling, handsome man with a glint in his eye.
My locker represented my future. So today, I’ve started creating vision boards. I pull out old magazines or surf my favorite places online to find inspiration. I then create a collage of images that help keep me motivated for the year.
While I never bought an XJ6, some of my other visions did come to fruition. I learned from my teenage experience that the more specific I am, the higher the likelihood that my visions aren’t just dreams. Instead, they are goals with plans.
The key to vision board success is focus.
Step 1:
Reflect on your values and how you’d like to show up in the future. Are you seeking career advancement? A better relationship with food choices? A more peaceful home environment?
Step 2:
Using colored pens, printed text, or images, decorate a sheet of paper with these representations. There are no rules, so be as creative as you want.
Step 3:
Place your vision board someplace you will see often.
I don’t need a scientific study to understand that my dad’s list of goals helped him succeed because he looked at them daily. His focus never strayed.
I wish the same for you. Create your vision board and watch your dreams turn into achievable goals.
